1980 - 1983 Overhaul and Refueling

The 1980-1983 overhaul saw some major changes made to the USS Long Beach. The ship had major changes made to its radar systems. The AN/SPS-32 2D air search, AN/SPS-33 3D tracking, AN/SPS-12 2D air search, and two AN/SPG-49 tracking/illumination radars were removed. The AN/SPS-48 3D air search, and AN/SPS-49 long range 2D air search replaced the earlier AN/SPS-32 and AN/SPS-33 radars. This resulted in the loss of the fimiliar looking billboard radars from the super structure. The four AN/SPG-55 tracking and illumination radars associated with the RIM-2 Terrier launch systems were upgraded to support the Standard Missile two extended range missile (SM-2ER Block II). The RIM-8 Talos missile system was deleted from the ship at this time. Two Mk15 Phalanx CIWS 20mm guns were fitted, as were eight Mk141 launch tubes for the Boeing Harpoon missile were added. Two Mk143 armored box launchers were fitted a few years later for eight Tomahawk missiles. The nuclear reactors were refueled with new cores.
